Next meeting: January 26 in building 10 room 100 @ 6:00 Upcoming events: Latinos In Agriculture participates in many activities sponsored by the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Science and the University. Many of these activities involve the outreach to underrepresented students, as well as to newly admitted students who want to get a feel for the college life. The participation of these activities allows LIA members to acquire leadership skills while promoting the college and at the same time forming strong bonds within the club members. Most of the activities are free of charge and involve serving the community.
LIA vs SHPE soccer showdown (slideshow) LIA and the Society of Professional Hispanic Engineers hold an annual soccer showdown in which the two clubs battle it out in the field.
Collegiate Symposium (slideshow) Every year Cal Poly gives High School sophmores the oppurtunity to experience the college life by hosting them for two days. During this time LIA talks to the potential students about preparing and succeeding in college as well as answering their questions about the various resources available and also helping the prospects choosing a major.
Open House Open House is an annual Cal Poly event that showcases the campus to admitted and current students, their supporters, alumni, and the San Luis Obispo community. The three-day event is the culmination of an entire year of hard work and dedication by a committee of student volunteers working under Student Life & Leadership's Orientation Programs, in collaboration with the community, student clubs, faculty, and staff.
26 Hours (event photos from the San Luis Tribune) (slideshow) The annual event is led by Cal Poly students in the Latinos in Agriculture Club. The event is aimed at motivating high school students to consider professional and managerial careers in California’s agriculture industry. Workshops scheduled for the high school students include chemistry, embryo transfer, dynamic modeling, soil science, plant propagation, dairy science, food processing technology, and more.
Thanksgiving Potluck (slideshow) Every thanksgiving Latinos In Agriculture welcomes members, friends, faculty, and special guest for our annual Thanksgiving Potluck. During this event, every invitee collaborates by bringing a dinner item and sharing dinner.
Faculty Apreciation (slideshow) Every year, Latinos In Agriculture nominates a faculty member that has gone beyond the classrooms to assist students or clubs with their respective events. This year, LIA nominated Mr. Bob Cummings. Mr. Cummings dedication and commmitment to the club has allowed the smooth run of many LIA events. Mr. Cummings, thank you for your support, service, and most important your dedication.
MANRRS LIA is an affiliate of the Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Science (MANRRS official website) national organization. The organization promotes the the agricultural sciences and related fields in a positive manner among ethic minorities. The organization is not limited to minorities. MANRRS pledges to achieve the inclusion, achievement, and advancement of all people in the agricultural sciences. Every year MANRRS host a national conference. During this conference attending schools participate in contest, workshops, a career fair, and various key note speakers from current agriculture leaders.
Farm City Nites at Farmers Market Once a year, Cal Poly's agriculture clubs showcase and promote their organization by attending the Farm City Nites at San Luis Obispo's Farmers market. During this event, clubs set up booths and activies for the community members. Every year LIA participates in this event. |
