The Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS) and the Latinos in Agriculture (LIA) student organizations serve a diverse population of students at Cal Poly. MANRRS-LIA offers opportunities for students to develop their leadership skills. The many activities that focus on community service, academic and career development, and social well-being, provide ample "learn-by-doing" experiences in leadership development. Affiliation with the national MANRRS organization offers many more leadership experiences for members. MANRRS-LIA has been an active student organization in the community. It is important for all members to practice their roles as servant-leaders. Members realize the importance of giving without asking for anything in return. The satisfaction of knowing that the donation of time, talent, and/or energy has assisted others is a reward in itself. MANRRS-LIA activities include participation in a number of recruitment and educational programs for high school students. Some of the programs have been sponsored by the College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences while others are sponsored by off-campus organizations. Among the programs served are the science and technology workshops known as "26 Hours of Science & Technology in Agriculture". MANRRS-LIA often hosts various student groups when they come to visit our campus. Leading tours of the campus, tutoring elementary children, supporting youth recreational programs, and assisting other student organizations as the need arises, are examples of other ways we serve the community. The membership knows that their primary reason for being at Cal Poly is to earn a college degree. The baccalaureate degree is the key to their future success in positions of leadership in agriculture. Some MANRRS-LIA members have found that forming study groups is an ideal way to complete assignments and prepare for examinations. Members rely on one another to share strategies for successfully completing course work at Cal Poly. Learning more about the availability of careers, and the requirements for entry into specific careers of a managerial/professional nature are goals of MANRRS-LIA. Field trips, study tours, and hosting industry leaders on campus are ways MANRRS-LIA works toward achieving these goals. The organization strives to reach out to all potential members. MANRRS-LIA hopes that all members view MANRRS-LIA as the "foundation" or "springboard" for participation in the multitude of other available activities and opportunities. Social activities include barbecues, recreational events, field trips, special events with other student organizations, and a variety of other educational/ recreational activities. |
